About Elmwood Park Zoo

Elmwood Park Zoo was formed in 1924 when a private landowner gave the Borough of Norristown a tiny piece of land and a few white-tailed deer. Throughout the 1920s, the Zoo, which was run by the Borough as a section of Elmwood Park, displayed a variety of animals, including monkeys, bears, peacocks, deer, raccoons, and rabbits. The Zoo was a popular visit not just because of its displays, but also because of the natural spring that gave pure water to the borough's citizens.

Over the years, the Zoo has grown and altered. Advances in animal care transformed exhibitions from bare wire cages (which were the norm in the 1920s) to more naturalistic, animal-friendly environments.

 

Elmwood Park Zoo now attracts over 500,000 visitors each year for an educational experience in a fun, clean, and family-friendly environment. The Zoo, despite its ongoing expansion and improvement, preserves much of its heritage. The historic Spring House has been converted into an administrative office, and the original Zoo office, built in 1924, may still be found in the Zoo's back yard.

Eligibility Criteria For Elmwood Park Zoo Internship

• Current college students, recent college graduates preferably with a biology or animal science related major
• Applicants that are serious about a career as a Zoo professional
• Previous animal experience is not a requirement, but desired
• The ability to work as part of a team is crucial, as are strong communication skills.
• Must be able to do physical work on your feet for more than 8 hours, lifting up to 50 pounds and perform activities such as raking or shoveling
• Must have complete/clear TB test, PA Child Abuse Clearance and PA Criminal Background check
• You must be at least 18 years of age
• Applicants must be able to work a minimum of two 10 hour shifts per week and work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and temperatures. 
• Interns will be working side by side with experienced keepers as well as staff and volunteers from various departments in the Zoo and should be comfortable working in a team environment

Internship positions are available from a variety of groups at the zoo including:

3. Conservation Education Engagement
4. Marketing Internship
5. Public Zoo Programing Internship
6. Event Planning and Operations Internship.

Interns will work closely with committed and experienced keepers to receive hands-on experience in all aspects of animal care and management in a zoological organisation. Daily animal husbandry, diet and nutrition, regular cleaning and upkeep of animal spaces and exhibitions, behavioural monitoring, animal enrichment, and guest interactions are just a few of the responsibilities.

Interns will also have the chance to obtain experience in the areas of exhibit set-up and design, positive reinforcement training programmes, animal welfare/wellness assessments, and record keeping, as needed.
